Expensive decisions do not look expensive at first. They look like another week of thinking, another postponed conversation, another request for information, or another reasonable explanation for why now is not the right time.
Deliberate delay is useful. Drift is not.
Good judgment can require patience. Deliberate delay has a reason, an owner, a review point, and a clear description of what the waiting is expected to reveal.
Drift has none of those properties. The decision remains psychologically active while operationally absent. People compensate around it. Temporary workarounds become routines. Options expire.
An unresolved decision is still making decisions.
Decision Tax accumulates in four places.
Time
Repeated discussion, mental revisiting, duplicated analysis, and work that may later need to be undone.
Opportunity
Paths that become unavailable, conversations that happen too late, and attention unavailable for better possibilities.
Execution
Teams waiting for direction, provisional work, conflicting priorities, and momentum repeatedly restarted.
Direction
Choices made around the unresolved choice until the workaround becomes the strategy by default.
Reopening can be more expensive than delaying.
A decision should reopen when material evidence changes, an assumption fails, or the environment shifts. It should not reopen simply because discomfort returned.
Without a record of the original frame, evidence, assumptions, and trade-offs, every new conversation begins from memory. The loudest recent concern can displace the reason the decision was made. A practical decision checkpoint
- What decision remains open?
- What is waiting expected to reveal?
- When will it be reviewed?
- What is the current delay already costing?
- Which option disappears first if nothing changes?
Make the delay visible.
Some decisions need more time. Keep consequential unresolved decisions visible so their continuing cost is understood.
Once the tax becomes visible, waiting can become a conscious strategy—or movement can begin before time makes the choice on your behalf.
